Kustatan River Fly In 1500×900

FLY IN FISHING TO KUSTATAN RIVER

Our fly out fishing trips to the Kustatan River begin in mid to late July and extend into the first week of September.  These are all silver salmon fishing trips and the Kustatan is well regarded as the strongest silver salmon (coho) producing watershed on the west side of Cook Inlet.  This trip is a short 20-minute flight from North Kenai, and it will put you into the remote coastal west foreland region where coastal rivers like the Kustatan come alive with fall runs of silver salmon. The Kustatan is a relatively shallow, glacial river mostly known for its huge run of silver salmon. Access to the river is by float plane via several sloughs and small ponds in the immediate area.

Where is the Kustatan River?

The Kustatan is a located almost directly west from the town of Kenai and is on the west side of Cook Inlet and the main Alaska Peninsula.  It is one of the more prominent rivers that drain the west foreland area, and it is just a few miles north of Big River. It begins at the terminus of glaciers in the Chigmit Mountains and the Aleutian Range and flows some 31 miles southeast through swampy boreal forest and mudflats before emptying into Cook Inlet. The Kasilof is largely turbid with a shallow sandy bottom mixed with rocks in the higher reaches.

Kustatan River Silver Salmon Fishing

We access the Kustatan River via a large freshwater slough located just above tide water on the lower Kustatan River.  This clear water slough creates the perfect deep water lading zone for the large turbine otters and dropping into this coastal paradise on floats is an incredible experience.  Our jets boats are awaiting you upon arrival and our guides will help you safely depart the plane and into the jet sled where you will use the slough to access the main stem of the Kustatan.  Fishing takes place both from the boat and from shallow sand bars.  The silty water makes fishing with cured salmon eggs on the bottom by far the most productive offering and with the fish just hours from the ocean, they are very aggressive and fight exceptionally hard.  The clear water of the slough does provide the opportunity to use both flies and lures and at certain times this can also be a top producer.

Kustatan River Silver Salmon Limits

The limit for silver salmon on the Kustatan River is three fish per person, per day.  Once you have retained your three fish limit you are required to cease fishing for the remainder of that day.

The Kasilof River, known as the “little brother of the Kenai”, is located just south of the Kenai River by 11 miles and is slightly smaller in size.  It begins at Tustamena Lake, the largest Lake on the Kenai Peninsula and flows northwest for 17 miles before dumping into Cook Inlet.  The Kasilof is considerably …
